Philadelphia Unveils Sustainable Development Goal Exposition at Jefferson Station, Highlighting the City's Commitment to a Greener Future
On October 9th, 2024, Philadelphia celebrated a milestone in its sustainability journey by unveiling the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Exposition at Jefferson Station. This exposition is a collaboration between the Global Philadelphia Association and SEPTA. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who made this event a resounding success.
This event was only possible with speakers from SEPTA and The City of Philadelphia. Speakers highlighted SEPTA’s new Sustainability Playbook and Philadelphia’s vision for a more sustainable future. Global Philadelphia aims to bring awareness to sustainability through its Sustainable Development Goals Public Art Campaign. A special thank you goes out to our speakers, who each brought invaluable insight and vision:
- Leslie S. Richards, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)'s Chief Executive Officer and General Manager
- Zabeth M. Teelucksingh, President of the Global Philadelphia Association
- Elizabeth H. Lankenau, AICP, Interim Director of Sustainability, City of Philadelphia
- City Councilmember Nicolas O'Rourke
- Jody Holton, SEPTA's Chief Planning & Strategy Officer
The Philadelphia Sustainable Development Goals Campaign is more than just an awareness project – it's a movement. The SDG campaign represents an initiative aimed at bringing community awareness and action to sustainability. The city is uniquely positioned in this international effort, as it is the first city globally to spearhead an SDG awareness project of this kind. Over the next two years, 17 neighborhood walls will be decorated with SDG-inspired artwork, turning public spaces into vibrant displays of sustainability. Local non-profit organizations will also receive donations for each SDG mural.
The release of SEPTA's Sustainability Playbook in April 2024 demonstrates SEPTA’s unwavering commitment to environmental, social, and economic best practices. Building on the SEP-TAINABLE 2020 plan, they are charting a course for a sustainable, inclusive, resilient, and connected public transportation system over the next seven years.
This initiative wouldn't be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. From educational institutions to healthcare providers, from financial services to retail giants – their diverse backing reflects the universal importance of these goals. Their commitment to promoting sustainability in Philadelphia is painting a brighter future for our city. We would also like to thank our Board Member Leah Douglas, C.M., and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) who first created the SDG exhibit for display in the airport.
Thank you, everyone, for joining us on this journey towards a more sustainable, equitable, and vibrant city. The road ahead is exciting, and with your continued support, there's no limit to what we can achieve.
