Global Philadelphia hosted the 11th annual Globy Awards on December 8th, 2025. The event honored individuals in six categories that have done significant work to promote the distinctive identity of Philadelphia around the world.

It was a common sentiment around the room that the 2025 Globys was “the best one yet.” A lovely venue, wonderful organizations and causes, and good company helped to make the event memorable. The Globys have truly become a top-tier celebration of Philadelphia’s leaders and position on the international stage; the whole city and beyond is recognizing its significance.

In fact, the Globys have become such sought-after awards that GPA Board Chair Rob McNeill made sure to specify how someone can earn a Globy when addressing the audience. The most important components are that the organization you represent is a member of GPA, and that your work furthers the global image of the Greater Philadelphia area.

Every aspect and person involved in the event was included with intention. Everyone present played a role in promoting GPA’s efforts and supporting Philadelphia’s development; the Ballroom at the Ben, the event location, preserves the city’s history and connection to founding father Ben Franklin; even the plant centerpieces on the tables served a sustainable purpose, doubling as gifts for attendees to take home.

In addition, as our city eagerly looks toward one of its most significant historical anniversaries next year, GPA was proud to have Michael Newmuis, Philadelphia 2026 Director from the Office of the Mayor, as the Globys emcee. Newmuis, also on GPA’s SDG Advisory Council, kept each awardee’s contributions in perspective and brought an unmatched energy to the afternoon.

As for notable moments, it would be impossible not to mention the excitement in the room when Jay Wright came onstage to present the Lifetime Achievement Globy Award winner, Father Peter Donohue. All in the room shared common interests in the heritage and global presence of our city, and unsurprisingly, the notorious Philadelphia sports pride was represented as the former Villanova men’s basketball coach and National Champion spoke and introduced his good friend.

With humility and humor, Father Peter Donohue, longtime President of Villanova University, expressed his gratitude for even being considered for a lifetime achievement award. “In the arts,” he explained, “a lifetime achievement award is often a sign that you are on your way out of the career. But I plan to keep going.” Philadelphia excitedly anticipates Father Donohue’s continued service to his university community and beyond for years to come.

The five other Globy Award categories recognized individuals from different sectors that have set themselves apart and been true change-makers in the city. GPA honored Jane Golden, Founder and Executive Director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, with the Community Leadership Globy Award, for her role in developing the city’s arts sector and identity as the “Mural Capital of the World.” Her stories of innovation and growth are a testament to her worthiness of the award and a perfect representation of Philadelphia.

During his acceptance speech, Deavens shared that “today is not about anyone personally. It is about a city that is becoming more inclusive and more connected every year.” These words and so many others showcased the spirit of the celebration, as everyone came together to recognize the progress and achievements of Philadelphia, and those who make our city what it is.

GPA extends our heartfelt thanks to our media sponsors and those who contributed donations for the event’s giveback partner, Mother Bethel AME Church. We look forward to another great year in Philadelphia and wish everyone a happy holiday season.
