Eastern State Penitentiary is a museum interpreting the legacy of American criminal justice reform from the site of the world’s first penitentiary. ESP pioneered the large-scale use of solitary confinement in the early 19th century and housed approximately 85,000 people during its 142 years of operation including "Slick Willie" Sutton and Al Capone.
Eastern State Penitentiary is located at 22nd Street and Fairmount Avenue, just five blocks from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Admission includes “The Voices of Eastern State" Audio Tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi; Hands-On History experiences; exhibits; and a critically acclaimed series of artist installations.
