Located in West Chester, Pennsylvania, a short drive from Center City, Philadelphia, the Compuseum is not just a museum; it is a nonprofit organization rooted in education and shared passion. Exhibits and educational events celebrate the digital age and provide interactive learning opportunities through hardware and software. Industry experts constantly update the spaces to showcase the newest developments in technology, a true testament to the ever-evolving field.

The Compuseum showcases many technological developments, including the ENIAC. Developed at the University of Pennsylvania, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, or ENIAC, officially launched in 1946. Those early developers likely never predicted how far their product could go 80 years later.

February 15th marks World Computer Day, an opportunity to recognize the creation of the first digital computer, and the Compuseum holds an annual event that dives into computing and those influencing the industry. Jim Scherrer, President and Founder of the Compuseum, shared that 2026’s virtual presentations for World Computer Day spanned several countries and “workshops, panel discussions, classroom lectures, and special performances focused on computing sciences and covered educational outreach, emerging technologies, and innovative thinking that can inspire the next generation of leaders.”

All aspects were available in person and online, bridging physical gaps between groups with technology and allowing for content to be recorded. Global Philadelphia was a proud media partner for the event, which garnered regional and global recognition.

This year, the Compusem threw an accompanying celebration in partnership with the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center in Chester to commemorate the 80 year anniversary and demonstrate the digital computer’s development. Guests visited the Helicopter Museum and the ENIAC exhibit within it to reflect on the many achievements and innovations in technology over the decades.

The Compuseum emphasizes Philadelphia as a prime region to carry out its work. The passion for innovation and invention has existed here since the founding of the United States, and our intersection of diverse cultures, science, and information and technology systems continuously keep Philadelphia on the global map across disciplines. This populous field also encourages greater collaboration and networking amongst organizations, strengthening each field and spreading ideas further.

The 2027 World Computer Day theme will be “The Commodore Computer,” and all are encouraged to participate.
