Philly Goes FIFA: World Cup Fan Festival and Stadium Tours
Every four years, the FIFA World Cup thrills nations around the world as they root for their home country’s national soccer team. The host region changes for each rendition of the tournament, and this year’s competition spreads across North America, with Philadelphia one of the lucky sites able to welcome international players and fans for matches and festivities.
To provide those living nearby or visiting with the ability to soak in the spirit of the World Cup, even if they can’t see a live match, FIFA and Philadelphia have organized the Fan Festival. The weeks-long event spreads across Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park and has welcomed thousands of fans since the start of the tournament on June 11th.

Local businesses offer food options with “Philly Phlavor” and unique merchandise in the “Vendor Village.” FIFA World Cup sponsors provide fan activities, where visitors can score goals and color fans on the Home Depot patio, make custom soccer and Philly-themed charm bracelets in Bank of America’s tent, and take pictures during the Coca-Cola experience.
Whether looking to chill on a lounge chair or jump and chant at the front of the crowd, the festival accommodates the watching style of every fan. Everyone can experience the matches as they want with multiple big screens available and with the encouraging sense of community present throughout all sections.
On Friday, June 12th, the US Men’s National Team played their first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As the sun began to set and the heat continued to simmer, USA took the pitch against Paraguay. Thousands of soccer fans at the Fan Festival stood at attention as the national anthems rang out, anticipation buzzing through the air and strangers huddling together, united in fandom and country pride. Before long, the US Men’s National Team scored its opening goal of the World Cup, and held the lead through the game, claiming victory with a score of 4-1.

Since then, the Fan Festival has been swarmed, even reaching a capacity of 15,000 for the Brazil versus Haiti match on June 19th. It’s incredible to witness so many coming together to witness the best of the best in the world’s most popular sport. Of the 48 countries represented, four of them are seeing their team in the world’s largest soccer tournament for the first time.
For those lucky enough to have their country’s team playing in Philadelphia, they can witness the match live at Philadelphia Stadium. Though an expensive ticket, global soccer fans have shown their willingness to travel thousands of miles and pay the price to cheer on their players.
Philadelphia Stadium is hosting Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Brazil, France, Iraq, Curacao, Croatia, Ghana, and more as they vie for wins and points during the group stage of the tournament. On July 4th, the 250th birthday of the United States, a Round of 16 match will take place in Philadelphia. This is Philadelphia’s first time being a host site for the FIFA Men’s World Cup, though the city hosted matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2003.

For those not attending matches in person, FIFA offers tours of Philadelphia Stadium so that visitors can experience the facilities and pitch up close. This is not an exclusive opportunity; anyone can purchase tickets for the stadium tour on days when there is no match at the stadium. With the chance to view the pitch from every angle, walk through the press boxes and locker rooms, and even step onto the pitch’s sidelines, the stadium tour gives fans a behind-the-scenes look into the tournament.
Philadelphia Stadium features seating for 65,000 fans, and there will hardly be an empty seat throughout the tournament. The hardworking staff keep the pitch’s grass pristinely clipped and hydrated, the locker rooms stocked and comfortable for visiting players, and the stadium prepared to offer the best experience for fans. Getting to walk through the stadium in the same way the players do adds to the anticipation and understanding of the true scale of this event.

As a global city, home to a myriad of cultural groups and a renowned location for international tourism, Philadelphia has flourished with the influx of visitors and increase in country pride, whether that be for the USA or other home countries. International visitors are experiencing the best of Philly, from Philly cheesesteaks to the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This tourism boost will increase our international status, as so many preparations were made to shine a light on the attributes of Philadelphia and encourage visitors to return in the future. Philadelphians with international heritage have also gotten to express their cultural pride, demonstrating the cultural diversity that our city celebrates.
