During a two-week trip to South Korea with Temple University in 2025, I had the opportunity to tour various facilities in one of the country’s port cities, Incheon. The focus of these tours were specifically to highlight efforts of sustainable development in all aspects of life in Incheon.

As South Korea is becoming increasingly renowned in popular culture, many are becoming more familiar with its capital and largest city, Seoul. However, on the western border of Seoul sits another city: Incheon, home to the country’s major international airport and a significant player in its international affairs for decades. It serves as a “prominent business hub, with major industries spanning iron,” steel, textiles, and more.

Additionally, Incheon has been a Sister City of Philadelphia since 2003. This relationship has created countless opportunities for professionals and students as citizen diplomats including economic, educational, cultural programs and excursions.

Songdo

One of our stops in Incheon was Songdo Smart City. Also known as Songdo International Business District, it has a number of diverse functions. It was developed on reclaimed land from Incheon’s waterfront in two phases over the course of sixteen years, beginning with the founding of the city’s development in 2002 and ending in 2018 with the opening of Incheon Art Center.

It boasts green spaces that occupy 40% of the area, LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings, and water recycling systems, as well as efficient and safe public transportation. Stationed between Seoul and Incheon International Airport, it acts as the main connecting point between South Korea and the world.

Songdo was designed and built to support sustainable living and serve as a hub for international businesses. Songdo unites the projects led by Incheon’s Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) and InsRoad initiatives. The heart of Songdo Smart City in conjunction with these projects is to make life more healthy, safe, and efficient for residents and workers. Following this example, surrounding industrial areas have also adopted environment-friendly initiatives for the benefit of local workers and residents, as well as the natural habitat.

Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ)

Most notably, Songdo is home to the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) headquarters. Established as South Korea’s first economic free zone in 2003, this branch of the economic zone is known as a “global hub for the high-technology service industry.” It is one of three IFEZ branches, the others being in neighboring Yeongjong and Cheongna, serving as the centers for logistics and tourism, and businesses and residential living, respectively.

A free economic zone is an economic area specifically designed to attract foreign investment. IFEZ has successfully done this by ensuring diverse business opportunities alongside convenient administrative services, extensive tax incentives, and safe and comfortable living spaces.

Songdo’s G-Tower serves as the main building for the IFEZ headquarters’ operations. There, we had discussions of surveillance and locals’ opinions of heavy public surveillance. Through unified monitoring of almost 10,000 facilities across the three IFEZ districts, residents and workers have seen favorable outcomes, including greater safety, reduced already-low crime rates, and increased emergency response time. This collection of health and safety-related data takes place at the IFEZ Smart City Integrated Operation Center in the same building.

Furthermore, the IFEZ headquarters also serves as a host for a great number of United Nations organizations, establishing a commitment and intentional connection to the rest of the world through technology and sustainable development.

Namdong: Industrial Transformation

Incheon’s efforts towards sustainable everyday living was made evident during our tour of Incheon’s Industry Road (InsRoad).Traveling between two different parts of the city, we toured public parks, green areas, and rest stations designed purely to improve the quality of life of local industrial workers.

In years passed, Namdong Complex was specifically known to have a host of issues which repelled populations from residing there including outdated infrastructure, poor working environment, and industrial pollution. In order to boost workers’ morale and create healthy working and living environments, Incheon City, through a regeneration project, worked to improve the area’s outdoor spaces to be more accessible and safe for locals.

Our tour guide pointed out functions such as improved roads, greenery, and street lamps, characteristics that are typically taken for granted in our everyday life. However these developments are to improve safety and quality of living, resulting in an inflow of residents to the area. This is due to the goals and work of the InsRoads initiative. Separated into two sections, environmental improvement and industry, various companies work towards sustainability in their own capacities.

INFESO

Several environmental and industrial projects and companies work towards sustainability in some capacity as a part of InsRoad. Out of the production companies, we visited INFESO, a major steel design and architecture company. Established in 1985, the company is renowned for both its designs and production process. As we toured the company’s main office and manufacturing facilities, we observed how INFESO takes its designs and brings them to life with the power of laser technology and steel welding.

INFESO has also undertaken a plethora of environment-related projects, working to make areas in and beyond Incheon safer and more convenient for visitors. These projects include their Smart Shelter and Solar Pine, their environment-friendly solar panel shelters.

Incheon is a prime example of future-oriented urban planning and partnership in global affairs. Businesses and families are guaranteed success and comfort because of the city’s prioritization of active sustainability in its undertakings.
