Global Philadelphia Association Announces 2024 Events in Honor of World Heritage Week – Celebrated Across Philadelphia from May 19th- May 25th
Today Global Philadelphia Association announces the exciting lineup of events in honor of the 2024 World Heritage Week from May 19th through May 25th. World Heritage Week is a tribute to Philadelphia’s designation as a World Heritage City. Established by the city government, World Heritage Day falls on the last Thursday of May each year, and World Heritage Week extends this celebration with a series of events highlighting the city’s global connections and cultural diversity. This collaborative effort features esteemed community partners, the Office of the City Representative, and a range of events hosted by the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA).

SUNDAY, MAY 19, 2024
FREE- Woodmere Art Exhibit- 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Through a partnership between Global Philadelphia Association and Woodmere Art
Museum, the organizations are offering art education to Philadelphia district schools.
Eight Philadelphia schools have participated in the program, including Esperanza
Charter Academy, McClure, Solis Cohen, Kennedy Crossan, Spring Garden,
Lingelbach, Shawmont, and Jenks Academy for Arts and Sciences Schools,
culminating in an exhibition in Woodmere Art Museum’s Millard Children’s Gallery
opening during World Heritage Week.
Throughout the opening reception on Sunday, May 19, attendees are invited to
view students’ work, inspired by the artwork of Philadelphia-based, Venezuela-
born artist, Henry Bermudez. The artist’s multi-media paintings are filled with
vibrant colors, patterns, and dazzling textures that convey the richness of Latin
America’s rainforests and his respect for its cultures and mythological deities.

TICKETED- Philadelphia Visitor Center’s Philly Opener- 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
The Philadelphia Visitor Center’s Philly Opener event will be an inaugural event to kick off the tourism season in Philadelphia. This event, held during National Travel and Tourism Week will take place at the Independence Visitor Center in the heart of Historic Philadelphia and will feature the first-ever presentation of the Most Valuable Philadelphian (MVP) Award. The event will feature a pep rally atmosphere with festive food, live entertainment, and a preview of the can’t-miss experiences around Philly this tourism season.

FREE- SDG #2: Zero Hunger Mural Art Unveiling with the Global Philadelphia Association- 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
GPA, GIANT and Philabundance are working together to debut the artwork of Branche Coverdale which highlights SDG 2: Zero Hunger. Each mural project contains a grant awarded to a deserving organization doing related work. Sustainable Development Goal #2 is about creating a world free of hunger by 2030. The global issue of hunger and food insecurity has shown an alarming increase since 2015, a trend exacerbated by a combination of factors including the pandemic, conflict, climate change, and deepening inequalities. Philabundance was founded in 1984 with the simple belief that no one should go hungry while healthy food goes to waste. Their mission is to drive hunger from our communities today and to end hunger for good. This grant is sponsored by GIANT Foods.
