The Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) have announced the revival of the Orbis Journal of World Affairs. With the support of new leadership and this valuable partnership, the longstanding journal will transmit information from new sources and include discussions on new topics.

Orbis was created in 1957 as an avenue to inform the public and policymakers about developments in global affairs. The relaunch will maintain Orbis’ original mission of delivering scholarly insights to its readers through written works or podcasts, but will expand by becoming a free resource through its new website, covering new topics like emerging technologies, and publishing written works from authors with different backgrounds.

By blending peer-reviewed works with contributions from educators and practitioners in the field, the journal will help readers not only understand what is happening in the world, but why it matters and how leaders are using the information. The increase in available research allows for the public to prioritize education and recognize opportunities for civic participation.

“Orbis has been at the forefront of geopolitical debate and discussion since 1957,” shared Dr. Aaron Stein, President of FPRI. “I can’t wait to take it from behind a paywall and to make it available to all our readers, and to really focus on bridging the divide between academia and policy.”

The journal’s upcoming revival represents more than an institutional partnership. It signals a renewed commitment to the free exchange of global knowledge and the need to research and educate the public on developments in technology and world affairs. The return to an open-access digital format promises to make this critical dialogue more inclusive than ever before.

FPRI is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit, as well as a GPA member, focusing on relevant analysis on the current state of foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States. FPRI and the Sam Nunn School’s valuable perspectives on geopolitical events and academic research ensure that diverse and timely scholarship will be an asset to the journal.

Orbis will relaunch in Spring 2026 with publication occurring on the website as well as in a quarterly digital version of the journal. Bi-monthly podcasts and access to virtual and in-person events hosted by FRPI and the Sam Nunn School will also be featured.
