event flyer

Join us for a unique experience as we discuss Peggy Shippen ‘s life during the American Revolution as we relax within the walls of the 1767 historic Laurel Hill Mansion. This free event which includes a tour and light refreshments, is offered by Women for Greater Philadelphia, stewards of the Mansion, and is the inaugural meeting of the organization’s new Historic Book Club. The book, Treacherous Beauty: Peggy Shippen, the Woman Behind Benedict Arnold’s Plot to Betray America by Mark Jacob and Stephen H. Case (2012) has been selected for its enticing story which begins in Philadelphia, includes Laurel Hill Mansion, and a tale of high treason which could have changed the outcome of the revolution. Famous names and places come alive in this story, and we hope you will be inspired by both the book and the setting in which we will discuss the intrigue.

Arrive prior 1:30 to take advantage of all the event’s features and begin the house tour. Meet like-minded people, enjoy conversation, delve into history, and imagine yourself alive two centuries ago as you stroll through the house and enjoy refreshments on the mansion’s porch overlooking the Schuylkill River. To end this delightful experience, a speaker with knowledge of the Benedicts and Philadelphia will connect this history to a present-day reality.
