Night of Lights

Join the Chestnut Hill Conservancy for Night of Lights 2026, a free outdoor public history, architecture, and design exhibition that transforms Germantown Avenue into a walkable experience of light, storytelling, and place.

Now in its ninth year, Night of Lights invites visitors to explore large-scale projected slideshows displayed through storefront windows and across historic building facades, illuminated to reveal architectural details often overlooked after dark. Created using archival photographs, maps, artwork, and contemporary imagery, each presentation offers a new way to experience the history, landscapes, architecture, and evolving identity of Northwest Philadelphia.

Developed as part of Philadelphia's 2026 commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary, this year's exhibition explores more than 250 years of history, landscapes, and architecture through a distinctly local lens. Rather than focusing on a single historical moment, the program traces the evolution of the region—from the Lenape stewardship of the Wissahickon landscape through the Revolutionary era and into the present—examining how communities have shaped, preserved, interpreted, and reimagined the places we know today.

Planned presentations will explore themes including the evolution of the Wissahickon landscape; architecture, preservation, and community development; historic public gardens and designed landscapes; Northwest Philadelphia's foodways; and George Washington's march through present-day Northwest Philadelphia on the eve of the Battle of Germantown. The exhibition will combine original productions by the Chestnut Hill Conservancy with collaborative presentations developed in partnership with historians, cultural organizations, and community partners.

The exhibition opens Friday, October 2, with the annual Flip the Switch celebration and continues nightly through Monday, October 5. Opening night features live music, giveaways, volunteer storytellers, and interactive activities, while the illuminated projections remain on view each evening throughout the weekend. Saturday through Monday, visitors are invited to experience the exhibition at their own pace through a self-guided tour of the illuminated architecture and projected installations along Germantown Avenue.

Presented in partnership with DesignPhiladelphia and Archives Month Philly, Night of Lights demonstrates how design, preservation, and community storytelling can transform the built environment into a shared public experience. By projecting history directly onto the architecture and streetscape that shaped it, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider familiar places through new perspectives and discover how more than 250 years of change continue to inform the future of Northwest Philadelphia.
