Nearly 120 years after J.M. Synge’s provocative masterpiece The Playboy of the Western World stunned audiences, Inis Nua—Philadelphia’s hub for contemporary Irish theater—launches our 21st season with an audacious adaptation by Nigerian playwright Bisi Adigun and acclaimed Irish author Roddy Doyle (known for The Commitments and Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha). Set in contemporary Dublin, this reimagining transforms Synge’s young scoundrel, Christy Mahon, into Nigerian refugee Christopher Malomo, who arrives at a dilapidated pub with a wild story he hopes will secure his safety. Christopher’s humorous—and ultimately perilous—encounters with a vibrant cast of Dubliners highlight the enduring relevance of Synge’s classic through a sharp, modern perspective.
