Join Fleisher and the official Día de los Muertos committee Calaca Flaca (Skinny Skeleton) in November as we hold our fifth Día de los Muertos celebration. With a theme of the Mayan Afterworld, it begins with a series of workshops focused on the traditional Mexican holiday and concludes with two altar celebrations, a vigil, and a procession through South Philadelphia. All events listed below are free and open to the public and held at Fleisher unless otherwise noted. Free registration is required for all workshops.
Día de los Muertos Schedule of Events

Paper Maché Sculpture (six-session workshop)
Register for freeThursdays, Sept. 14-Oct. 26, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Artist Ana Palma will work with students to create paper maché sculptures to be used in the Día de los Muertos procession.

Creating the Altar (five-session workshop)
Register for freeWednesday, Sept. 27-Oct. 25, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Help lead artist César Viveros create the main components for the altar in Fleisher’s Sanctuary.

Make Your Own Cempatchuzitl Paper Flower
Monday-Saturday, Oct. 23-31, all dayVisit Fleisher’s lobby and create paper marigolds that will become part of the altar installation in the Sanctuary.

Friday, Oct. 27, 6:00-9:00 p.m.La Calaca Flaca invites you to a preview party to learn more about the culture and traditions of Mexico. Artists Ana Palma and César Viveros will take us behind the scenes and share their creative process in constructing this year’s altar, dedicated to the Mayan Underworld, while Juan Carlos Romero of PhillyTaco will offer delicious authentic cuisine and cocktails.

Altar Celebration and Procession
Sunday, Oct. 29, 4:00-9:30 p.m.On this special night, join the community for a procession through South Philadelphia, ending in the Sanctuary for the first of two altar celebrations. Explore the elaborate altar installation and enjoy special performances.

Día de los Muertos Vigil
Wednesday, Nov. 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m.Join the committee, Puentes de Salud, and Southwark School students in the Sanctuary for an evening of tribute to loved ones who have passed away.
