Beth Sholom Preservation Foundation: Emily Hage of the Maguire Museum
After years of careful renovations, Paul Cret’s famous Lower Merion building, originally designed for the Barnes Foundation, is now open to the public, reincarnated as the Frances M. Maguire Art Museum at Saint Joseph’s University. In addition to rotating exhibitions, it features the university’s permanent collection, a wide variety of artworks produced over a nearly 3,000-year period in North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Museum Director Emily Hage will delve into the many challenging and impactful choices made in renovating and reimagining the building and launching a new, 21st-c. museum.
Dr. Hage is the Director of the Maguire Art Museum and a full professor in art history at Saint Joseph’s University. Before coming to Saint Joseph’s, she worked over the span of ten years in art museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her area of expertise is 20th-c. European and American art. Her book, Dada Magazines: The Making of a Movement (Bloomsbury) came out in 2021, and her next book project is “The Art of Fortune Magazine.” Dr. Hage earned her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.
