After graduation from the University Of Pennsylvania Law School in 1970, Stephen J. Mathes served as Law Clerk for the Honorable Arlin M. Adams in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He then started a career as a commercial litigator.

As an associate and partner at Dilworth, Paxson from 1971 through 1991, Mr. Mathes served on the executive committee and was elected managing partner. From September, 1973 through May, 1974, he took a leave of absence from the Dilworth Firm to work in the Major Felony Trial Unit and the Special Investigations Unit of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office.

In 1992, Mr. Mathes joined Hoyle, Fickler, Herschel & Mathes LLP as a partner, where he continued to practice as a commercial litigator and where he served on the Executive Committee.

In 2011, he commenced a sole practice focusing on commercial litigation.

Mr. Mathes is Director and President Emeritus of The Levitt Foundation, an independent foundation interested in the environment as it relates to children and youth living in New York City and on Long Island, New York.

Currently, he is a member of The American Law Institute and the Philadelphia and American Bar Associations and their litigation sections.
