Description: Constructed between 1758 and 1764, Saint Peter’s Protestant Episcopal Church was designed by Philadelphia architect/builder Robert Smith. It is an outstanding—and extremely well preserved—example of high- style Georgian architecture. The interior displays an innovative and rare architectural response to 18th-century Anglican liturgical requirements; the altar is at the east end and the pulpit is on axis at the west end, giving equal weight to the liturgy and the spoken word. The extraordinarily tall tower, designed by William Strickland, was built in the 1840s.
