Description: This prominent institution is the nation’s first chartered hospital. Pennsylvania’s colonial legislature authorized it in 1751, and it has been at its present location since 1755. The hospital was conceived by Dr. Thomas Bond, an eminent 18th-century Philadelphia physician, and Benjamin Franklin, who helped to secure the necessary funds to establish the hospital. Although the hospital campus has been greatly enlarged over the years, the handsome exterior of the original Georgian structure, known as the Pine Building, survives remarkably unchanged.
