Description: This rare survivor of a once common urban amenity was established in 1745 in response to the city’s burgeoning population, particularly in the Society Hill area. Like the older Market Street Market it supplemented, the New Market is simple and utilitarian in design, with two parallel rows of brick pillars supporting a gable roof. Unlike most of its type, which disappeared as neighborhood groceries took their place, New Market survived. So did its “head house,” an attached firehouse built in 1804. Now restored, New Market is an important component of a renewed Society Hill and a visual reminder of how colonial Americans obtained their daily produce.
