Description: Completed in 1762, this is one of the finest examples of late-Georgian domestic architecture in the Middle Colonies and the most opulent of the villas that once surrounded Philadelphia. Built of stone, stuccoed, with brick trim, Mount Pleasant consists of a large central block flanked by identical pavilions—a familiar Palladian arrangement. Sea captain and privateer John MacPherson built the house, which is now a historic house museum furnished primarily with fine Philadelphia pieces.
