Description: Founded in 1855, this is the second-oldest cricket club in the United States. Whereas its namesake sport dominated club activities in the 19th century, tennis gained prominence in the early 20th. William T. “Big Bill” Tilden, an international tennis star of the 1920s, was a member. The imposing brick clubhouse is an accomplished example of early Georgian Revival architecture and was designed by Charles F. McKim of McKim, Mead and White. Completed in 1891, it served as a prototype for numerous area buildings designed in the same style.
