Description: This building represents an outstanding example of philanthropic support for education in the United States and is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the country. In 1831, wealthy merchant Stephen Girard bequeathed property worth more thansix million to establish an educational institution to be operated by the city. Girard College opened in 1848 in this magnificent Corinthian structure, designed by architect Thomas U. Walter.
