Description: Designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Cope & Stewardson, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia’s 22nd Street building is an unusually bold example of early 20th century institutional building designed in the classicism of 17th century England. According to its nomination documentation for the National Historic Register, “this building illuminates what is perhaps the central theme of the history of American medicine, the transformation of an exclusive and somewhat guild-like trade into a modern profession.” The building is now home to the Mutter Museum of medical oddities and medical equipment.
