Description: Situated on the bank of the Schuylkill, these 15 private clubhouses are a sports and social center for many Philadelphians. The parent organization, the Schuylkill Navy, was formed in 1858 and continues as the nation’s oldest amateur governing body in sports. The Navy restricts its contests to amateurs, and its rules have helped clarify distinctions between amateur and professional sports. One of the buildings houses the oldest club in the United States, another the oldest women’s club. Architect Frank Furness designed the Undine Barge Club, which partisans consider—architecturally speaking—“the best little oar house.”
