Description: Opened in 1857, this is the country’s oldest opera house still used for its original design.. Architects Napoleon Le Brun and Gustave Runge were influenced by European opera houses in designing this Renaissance Revival structure of brownstone and brick. The elegant auditorium is known around the world for its fine sight lines and acoustics. The Academy of Music was the original home of The Philadelphia Orchestra from its beginnings in 1900 until the Orchestra moved to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in 2000. The Academy is owned by the Philadelphia Orchestra Association and managed by the Kimmel Center.  The Orchestra and the Academy of Music Restoration Fund Office are responsible for the annual restoration and preservation of the building, and are typically engaged in projects of at least $1M each year.
