Oshogatsu is the Japanese New Year, celebrated on the first day of January. Celebrate an early Japanese New Year this holiday season with lush ikebana flower arrangements and traditional decorations of pine, bamboo, and berries. Displays for the new year’s tea and holiday games will be on view, along with an exhibition of winter kimono. Our Jizo statue will be decorated with a traditional cap and bib, and we will share the kamishibai story “Hats For Jizo” throughout both weekends. Oshogatsu will take place Dec 7, 8, 14 and 15.

Wear warm socks (we have slippers, too) and warm up with a complimentary cup of green tea on the veranda to enjoy the sparse beauty of the winter Japanese garden from the sun-soaked veranda.

On Sunday, December 15th, Shofuso will celebrate its last open day of the season by welcoming Shinto priestess Reverend Kuniko Kanawa, who will perform a traditional Kagura dance and offering. New Year omamori (amulets) and Shiwaku-no-Ooharae blessings (New Year blessings) will also be available for an additional fee.

We hope you’ll join us during this beautiful time of the year!
