Lecture and Discussion on the Lampedusa Boat Tragedy

On Oct. 3, 2013, a boat carrying 500 migrants mainly from Eritrea and Somalia and via Misrata (Libya) caught fire and capsized off the coast of Italy near the Island of Lampedusa. Over three hundred drowned. On Oct. 11, a similar boat with about 250 migrants capsized off the coast of Malta, and not far from Lampedusa. Some 50 passengers were reported dead. What are the causes and implications of these events?

On Thursday, Nov. 14, come out and hear Dr. Roland Adjovi, resident scholar from The College of Global Studies; Michelle Reale, librarian and faculty member; and Dr. Jennifer Riggan, assistant professor in the Department of Historical and Political Studies, discuss the events through the lenses of their research and personal experiences.

The event will be held in Brubaker 201 from 2 to 4 p.m. and is sponsored by Arcadia University’s Pan African Studies Collective (PASC). This panel is part of a series of lectures and presentations on Africa and its Diaspora held throughout the year and sponsored by the collective.
