One of Philadelphia’s iconic parks, Rittenhouse Square, is frequented and loved by many for its immaculate landscaping, electrifying events, and safety. None of this would be possible without the doings of Friends of Rittenhouse Square (FORS) — the park’s only reliable resource for upkeep and maintenance. FORS has had its share of success since its founding in 1976, but contrary to mainstream belief finds itself in a post-pandemic economic hurdle with little funding to maintain the needs of the park. This challenge is also augmented by the increase in foot traffic given the popularization of outdoor lounging through the pandemic.
Private donations, primarily from memberships, drive the work the FORS does on a daily basis to ensure neighbors of Rittenhouse Square and citizens of the city at-large enjoy the beauty of the park. Without the challenging maintenance work handled by FORS, visitors would not get to enjoy the lush lawns and colorful flower beds privately funded through the organization’s efforts. Not to mention -- graffiti removal, policies and regulations of the park, and the new bench program enhance the park’s value and overall function for visitors of all walks of life in the city.
This year, as was the case pre-pandemic, Friends of Rittenhouse Square is hosting the historic Ball on the Square with an added spin. The event will feature a new format to accommodate a larger audience including a sit-down dining experience for VIP supporters as well as an open format culinary and spirits tasting experience for all guests.
FORS since its inception relied on the support of events like the Ball on the Square to continue its work in the park, but the need for a fundraiser has never been as urgent as it is today. FORS is appealing to the public for their support and involvement in this year’s fundraising event with the hope of a future Rittenhouse Square as we all know it.
