7th Annual Trans-Pacific Partnership Series

In the seventh decade of a special relationship built on shared political values, mutual security interests, and close trade relations, internal and external dynamics now challenge the U.S. and Japan in Asia.

Prime Minister Abe and President Obama have offered the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement as one step toward crafting a new regional, economic order. Proponents see the Agreement as a game changer for the regional and global economy. Others see different paths forward. The Agreement faces strong political opposition in an increasingly protectionist U.S. Meanwhile, China has begun promoting a competing vision of Asia’s economic future which includes the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade bloc and the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

What will be the impact of TPP, RCEP, and other trade agreements on the Pacific Rim nations? How might a regional trade arrangement crafted by the U.S. and Japan transform the Asian economy? Who will take the lead in shaping a new Asian economic order?
