Job opportunity: Resident General Manager, Chamounix Mansion

Chamounix Mansion International Hostel, the first urban hostel in the United States, is located in the heart of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. Originally built in 1802 as a country home, the Mansion rests on a scenic bluff above the Schuylkill River and is convenient to Philadelphia's historic treasures, museums and cultural attractions. Chamounix (CHAM'- ahnee) Mansion provides clean, inexpensive accommodations for individuals, families, and groups. The hostel also offers meeting rooms with kitchen/dining areas for workshops, retreats, and events. Chamounix Mansion International Hostel is an affiliate of Hostelling International.

The hostel general manager is a full-time employee who is responsible for all facets of the operation of the hostel, both day-to-day and long-range, in accordance with the purpose, goals, and policies of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Chamounix Mansion. As a condition of employment, the general manager resides in a two-story, five room cottage on the grounds of Chamounix Mansion. The general manager is supported by a staff of two full- time assistant managers and a part-time housekeeper.


  • Minimum of 3-5 years' management experience and bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Customer service, public relations experience.
  • Fiscal management and daily audit and cash reconciliation experience (cash handling, budget reports and preparation).
  • Working knowledge of computers (word processing, spreadsheets, computerized reservation systems).
  • Property management experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to manage time well.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to respond to quickly changing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Hostel/Hotel experience preferred.
  • International and/or domestic travel experience preferred.
  • Emergency response certification (CPR, First Aid) preferred; training can be provided.


  • Oversee the guests and reservation functions to ensure superior service is delivered.
  • Oversee the appearance and cleanliness of the Mansion, Carriage House and grounds to ensure high quality is maintained and ensure compliance with Hostelling International standards.
  • Oversee security to ensure a safe and secure environment for guests, employees, and hostel assets.
  • Monitor all areas of the hostel and grounds to identify maintenance/repair needs and cooperate with the Board of Directors in the coordination of contractors so the physical assets of the hostel are protected.
  • Engage in active outreach through off-site meetings, telephone contact and social media resources, especially to potential group users, to develop overnight sales.
  • Coordinate staff work and vacation schedules; maintain employee motivation; monitor compliance with policies and procedures and labor regulations; and review employee performance.
  • Oversee the hostel daily log; maintain accurate records of hostel overnight and day use; maintain adequate supply of linens, blankets and products used at the hostel.
  • Timely complete and report bank deposits; record and maintain overnight inventory; and report and record expense receipts.
  • Compile and reconcile entries to facilitate the bookkeeping function; process financial statements and other reports to ensure accurate, timely information.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of operational and marketing plans for the hostel; make recommendations for improvements to enhance the assets, revenue and reputation of the hostel.
  • Review online hostel reviews and comment and respond as appropriate.
  • Any other duties or special projects as assigned by Board of Directors.
