A MIGHTY HANDFUL: Music of The Russian Five presented by FINE ART MUSIC COMPANY with TATYANA RASHKOVSKY, mezzo-soprano KATARZYNA SALWINSKI, piano ROLLIN WILBER, piano ‘The Five’ were a group of similar-thinking composers gathered around Mily Balakirev. They essentially created a myth about themselves as a musical movement that was more ‘authentically Russian’ than the classic music of the Conservatory, by composers such as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Along with Balakirev, were Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin. Their moniker, ‘A Mighty Handful,’ was coined by the influential Russian cultural critic, Vladimir Stasov, who advocated for a purer ‘Russianness’ in their music over the hold of European influences. They worked to incorporate what they heard in village songs, in Cossack and Caucasian dances, in church chants and the tolling of church bells. Their music became filled with imitative sounds of Russian life. They also tried to reproduce the long-drawn, lyrical and melismatic peasant song, what Glinka had once called ‘the soul of Russian music.’ ~ MUSIC BY: Mily Balakirev Cesar Cui Modest Mussorgsky Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Alexander Borodin ~ ~ PROGRAM INCLUDES: Pictures At An Exhibition, piano solo, by Mussorgsky Song of the Lel, from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera, The Snow Maiden Nastala Noch from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera, “Kashchey the Immortal” The Lark, by Mikhail Glinka, transcribed for piano solo by Balakirev Songs by Borodin, Cui and Balakirev Piano pieces by Borodin and Cui The Soul Flew Quietly Through the Celestial Sky [Tolstoy] by Mussorgsky Scherzo #1 in F major, for Four-Hand Piano, by Cui ~ ~ INFORMATION: 215-803-9725 EMAIL: [email protected] MORE DETAILS: www.FineArtMusic.com ~ SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 2018 at 7:30 pm IVY HALL – International Institute for Culture 6331 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19151 ADMISSION: $27/general; $22/seniors; $10/students TICKETS: Fineartmusiccompany.ticketleap.com ~ SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 2018 at 3:00 pm PHILADELPHIA ETHICAL SOCIETY 1906 S.
