Evening with an Expert: Minerals from the Classic Local Mines

Date:
Tuesday, March 13, 2018 - 5:00pm - 9:00pm
Location:
Wagner Free Institute of Science 1700 West Montgomery Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19121
United States

The Wagner’s mineral collection spans both the local and the international, with shiny magnetite from the French Creek Area, deep green malachite from Australia, and neon sulfur from Sicily. The specimens are arranged in the cases by type—so you can contrast 36 different manifestations of calcite, or see local and Swedish rhodonite sitting side by side.

You can experience the collection firsthand in the company of Ronald A. Sloto—geologist, curator, and author—at his upcoming "Evening with an Expert" gallery tour on March 13. He’ll guide a small group of participants through our mineral collection, pointing out important specimens and offering context beyond our hand-lettered curator’s labels. He’ll weave together mineralogy, geology, history, and biography—along with his collection of old photos and drawings—to describe some of the classic mines in the region.

You’ll learn about Brinton’s Quarry and the French Creek Mine from a seasoned expert as you wander through the Wagner’s collection. And you’ll enjoy wine and cheese as you listen.
