2017 Philadelphia Lantern Slide Salon

Thursday, October 12, 2017 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Wagner Free Institute of Science, 1700 West Montgomery Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19121
United States

Celebrate Archives Month Philly at the Wagner Free Institute of Science as we showcase glass lantern slides from area special collections and learn about the conservation of this unique medium. The American Philosophical Society, Bryn Athyn College-Swedenborg Library, the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts, Founder's Hall, Girard College, Hagley Museum and Library, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science will present an exciting evening of education and entertainment at the 5th annual Philadelphia Lantern Slide Salon.

In the spirit of lantern exhibition culture, this salon will bring together unique and rarely-seen images presented in the context for which they were created. Sit back and relax as we take historic tours of Girard College and Wanamaker’s department store; travel to the Hopei and Sichuan provinces of China; learn about the murals of Violet Oakley, and Emanuel Swedenborg and the Swedenborgian Church; the conservation of glass lantern slides; and more!

Predating the motion picture, lantern slides were used for entertainment and to illustrate educational programs. The Philadelphia Lantern Slide Salon will be held in the Wagner’s Victorian-era lecture hall using an historic lantern projector. Please join us for a rare treat as we revive an old technology in order to see culturally significant lantern slide collections from the libraries and archives of Philadelphia’s most distinguished institutions.
